Students, faculty, staff, and the Parent-Student-Teacher Association of Nathan T. Hall Elementary School
in Newark Valley NY, in partnership with Ziggy’s Quick Quilters, created 21 cot-sized patriotic quilts that
were sent to wounded military personnel. Individual quilt squares with heart-warming messages and
pictures were created by each student and staff member. Ziggy’s Quick Quilters, coordinated by Sherry
Asfoury, then assembled these gorgeous quilts. This interdisciplinary project, under the leadership of
second grade teacher Theresa Asfoury, also included collecting 81 boxes of personal hygiene items,
writing letters of thanks and encouragement, and recording patriotic songs sung by the students.
After the project was completed, the quilts were displayed at the old train station during the Binghamton Art
Walk, and again at the Newark Valley Fair before they were delivered to the wounded soldiers.

Ziggy's Quick Quilters is a group of ladies who started out making quilts for the homeless and those who lost everything catastrophically due to flood or fire, etc. In the beginning, we were five quilters, and over time, we have grown to nine. In January of 2007, we heard of the need to make quilts for wounded soldiers in the hospitals in Iraq, Afghanistan and Germany, and we partnered with Operation First Response (www.operationfirstresponse.org) and began focusing almost exclusively on that need. In conjunction with the quilts, we also send clothing items and hygiene, candy and staionary bags. Our goal was to send 500 quilts and 500 bags, and as of the end of 2009, we have sent over 450 quilts, 1200 pieces of clothing items, and 1,550 bags. We will soon make our goal, but we will continue with this as long as the need exists. |
